Information on pest occurrence and distribution is vital
for the improvement of regional and international trade in
agricultural products. Access to these data and to other
phytosanitary information will serve to facilitate decision
making during trade.
This website was created through the efforts of the East
African Physosanitary Information Comittee (EAPIC) and is one of
several East African pest information sites. All sites link to a
regional information system so that pest information can be
accessed and shared within the East African region.
This database, in conjunction with those developed by
COMESA and other organizations, will serve to increase food
security and trade in agriculture.
Pest Information Management System (PIMS)
The Pest Information Management System (PIMS) is a regional database for storing plant pest
lists and surveillance data.
The system was first developed by NCSU with support from USDA, and later upgraded through funding by UN-FAO.
The new PIMS has enhanced features that can assist member countries to access reliable information locally for domestic programs
as well as share critical information to satisfy international obligations (e.g. the International Phytosanitary Portal of the IPPC).
On a regional basis, National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) will
now able to combine resources and strategies for agricultural pest management and exclusion.
PIMS is hosted at the regional centre of excellence housed at the Kenyan Plant Health Inspection Service (KEPHIS)
